Having lived in four different countries during my childhood, I have had people step in and out of my life quite a few times. However, there are those who have consistently been a source of support, who have nurtured my development and left me with long lasting memories; and so I chose those individuals to share on this page of my blog.
The first and foremost supporters of my childhood; and the primary nurturers of my development are my mother and father. By virtue of almost being refugees from a war, to residents of a country for work and then immigrants to the United States of America, my parents were the only consistent 'village' that we had while the four of us grew up in various countries.
My father has always been a very hard working man, with a soft and gentle demeanor. As a father he is always reliable and dependable, whether it is to fix a shelving or to help me make big career decisions. He is always selfless in his advise, and I feel like I have a pillar that I can lean on at any time of my life. His nurturing has given me a huge amount of security and taught me to be wise and humble at the same time.
My mother has also always been very hard working, with a fun and creative personality. As a mother she nurtured all of us by making sure we had wonderful meals and clean clothes and a lovely home. She is always creative and artistic in everything she does, there was always music at home that my mother played and we enjoyed and she was always there for any of us in times of sickness or other hard times. I have learnt to do everything in a creative and detailed way, from my mother. I have learnt that hard work and commitment always pays off as well, and that being resilient and strong in tough times is key to survival.
Although in different continents, I have one uncle and two aunts that were always interested in whatever I was doing at each stage of my childhood. The three of them were loving and caring individuals who spent time with me, and gave me undivided attention, even if for an hour per year. All three were happy, relaxed, educated and exciting people. They have left me with a zest for life, an enthusiasm to always keep learning, and a sense of being important to others. It is their genuine, child friendly personalities that had fostered affection, and now I remember and value their every advise and actions towards me.
My female cousin who is ten years older than me, was always a role model while I was growing up. I heard about her more than I knew her, because again we lived in different continents but somehow she influenced my life. She was a beautiful, independent, and hard working young girl while I was a child who always gave me attention when we visited each other. I was always taken care of and guided by her, and in her gently demeanor, she would let me know that I was accepted and special to her. She has inspired me to be a strong woman, who is independent and hard working, while remaining humble and feminine.
My french teacher was a breath of fresh air in the school I went to, most of my childhood. She was very approachable and fun, she was sensitive to children's emotional well being and loved animals. I became very close friends with her daughter who was in my class, and we had years of fun together. Her influence on me was like a ray of hope in a gloomy place; she taught me to be open minded and to be adventurous. Only a few years ago, she found me on facebook and we all reconnected. Her warm and caring messages still make me feel special.

Zeina,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you included people in your web that weren't a part of your every day life. A child can be so impressionable and every encounter (frequent or not) can make such a difference on a child's view of the world and themselves. Thank you for sharing.
Sandra
It is very special to have people in your life that had your best interest at heart. A loving and caring family is essential in the positive growth and development of a child. Great blog.
